Painting recalls Nubia is an ancient region dating to 2500BC situated in N Africa in portions of modern Egypt and Sudan. The empire was noted for female leaders. Today, the term 'nubian queen' commonly refers to a woman of African heritage. Nubian women typically dyed their hair with henna, and women of means often shaved fully, wearing henna-colored wigs and merkins.
